Inside Story: Can You Prevent Hypertension
|
Hypertension Preventing Hypertension Hypertension is a common disorder characterized by high blood pressure. Individuals affected by hypertension have an increased risk of many complications, including heart attack and stroke. It is also one of the leading causes of heart failure. In many cases, the condition is asymptomatic until it has progressed into the later stages of the condition. When hypertension is not diagnosed in the early stages of the condition, the disorder is much more difficult to treat and there is a greater chance of developing serious complications from the condition. This is the main reason why it is so important to prevent hypertension from beginning in the first place. There are a number of causes of hypertension, with new causes being discovered by researchers on a regular basis. Many cases are caused by an underlying condition or infection, while in other cases, hypertension is a side effect of a certain medication. In some cases, a cause of hypertension cannot be found. These cases are diagnosed as essential hypertension. Anxiety and stress are other common factors in the development of hypertension. Some busy individuals may mistake their hypertension for stress about their job or just a general feeling of being unwell. In many cases, an individual experiences symptoms for years before deciding that they are serious enough to get checked out by a doctor. Common symptoms of hypertension to look out for include recurring headaches, dizziness, confusion, unexplainable nosebleeds, and vision problems. There are a few ways to prevent the occurrence of hypertension in healthy individuals. One way is to maintain a proper weight. Obese individuals are much more like to experience hypertension than someone that stays at or near their recommended weight. Extra weight is known to create pressure on the arteries further increasing the blood pressure. By maintaining a healthy weight and getting exercise daily, an individual can reduce their risk of hypertension by more than 50%. Modifying your diet is an excellent way to prevent the development of hypertension. By reducing the amount of fat in your diet as well as adding healthy carbohydrates, an individual can reduce their risk of hypertension by a significant amount. It is also important to increase the amount of calcium that the individual intakes daily, by drinking extra glasses of milk or taking calcium supplements. Reducing or eliminating smoking as a daily activity doe not really do much for blood pressure, but it can reduce the risk of heart attack or stroke. The main thing is to eat fruits, vegetables, and healthy carbohydrates to reduce the risk of developing hypertension. Some occurrences of hypertension cannot be avoided and in these cases, the disorder may require the use of medication for the rest of their lives. Prescription medications may reduce the blood pressure to a safer level, but this level can only be maintained with the continuation of the medications. After being diagnosed with hypertension, it is important that the individual is carefully monitored for any changes in blood pressure and regularly makes visits to the doctor. Anything less could be a serious threat to their health. i |
